[关键词]翻译 大学英语教学 能力培养

进入二十一世纪,尤其是我国加入WTO以来,英语的实用性在我国日益突出,社会对翻译人才的需求越来越大。而翻译专业人才有限,远不能满足实际需求。大学英语又缺乏对公外学生翻译能力的培养。因此,要培养公外学生的翻译能力,必须将翻译教学贯穿到大学英语中。本文结合教学实践,试图对大学英语中翻译教学进行探析,希望通过对学生翻译能力的培养进而全面提高学生的英语综合应用能力。

一、 当前大学英语教学中翻译教学的现状

笔者作为长期从事大学英语教学的一线教师,所看到的情况是:大多数学生听和读的能力较强,说、写、译的能力较弱。也就是说输入能力大大强于输出能力。导致这一状况的原因何在呢?

在大学英语日常教学中,“译”被长期忽略:教师把精力主要放在培养学生“听、说、读、(写)”的能力上。大部分教师(尤其是年轻教师)趋向于全英教学,试图创设一个全英文的教学环境。传统的语法翻译教学方法几乎被全盘否定,翻译教学和训练似乎与守旧等同,甚至将其与学生交际能力的培养对立起来。结果翻译只能处于被动地位。这种轻视翻译能力的培养的状况直接导致学生翻译能力普遍较低的严重后果。

二、翻译与听、说、读、写的关系

综合应用能力包括听、说、读、写、译,它们相辅相成,缺一不可。听和读是获取知识、语言习得的主要来源,而说和写是语言输出和交流交际的主要手段,当交际涉及到二种语言的转换时,那就需要一座桥梁,这座桥梁就是翻译。“译”可被理解为“听说读写译”的中心环节,它是信息收集、加工、转化、输出,最终形成概念和认识的枢纽,“译”显然是五种基本功里最难的一项,也是外语学习者语言和知识各方面能力的综合体现。当然,综合能力的提高离不开知识的积累,听、说、读、写、译环环相扣,各有其功。

三、 大学英语教学方法与翻译能力培养

翻译不仅是中西方两种语言和文化的相互交换,而且是两种思维的相互碰撞和交流。在大学英语教学中,如果单纯地使用交际教学法进行全英教学,学生中英互换的思维就无法得到锻炼和提高,翻译能力便难以改善。若单纯地使用传统的语法翻译教学,没有了一定的语言环境,学生的听说能力又得不到提高,甚至影响学生的学习兴趣。因此,笔者建议不妨将两种教学方法结合,灵活运用,共同为培养学生综合能力服务。

四、 翻译能力培养的方法

1. 适当使用翻译教学法,防止学生囫囵吞枣

对于简单的词汇、语法、句型等,用交际法等全英教学对学生而言颇有益处的,它有助于提供英语交际的情景,培养他们用英语思维的习惯;而对于具有抽象意义的词汇、复杂的语法、句型、篇章结构,要想让学生彻底明白和掌握它们,只用英语是不够的。此时传统的语法翻译教学能为语义复杂、文化内涵深厚的源语言找到相对应的母语,透彻明晰、省时省力又简洁易懂。例“How can a country where typical parents are ashamed of their daughter studying mathematics instead of going dancing, or of their son reading Weber while his friends playing baseball be expected to compete in the technology race with Japan?”(翟象俊等,126)由于该句较长,结构较复杂,可能会造成学生理解困难,但如采用语法分析法,首先抓住其构成主谓部分的基本词语:How can a country…be expected to compete…?然后再对其它成分进行分析,就不难理解和翻译了。

2.适当教授一些翻译理论和技巧

教师可以从课本中精心挑选一些疑难冗长、结构复杂的句子为例,适当有效地传授一些基本翻译理论和技巧(如翻译的标准、常用的方法、如何忠实于原文、什么是可接受译文等),对翻译中普遍出现的问题有针对性地进行分析。

例“It is a revealing fact about our language and culture that someone dedicated to pursuit of knowledge is compared to such a freak.”(翟象俊等,125)这是“It is + n. + that clause”的机构,that从句实为主语从句,因较长而后置,it为形式主语,此结构使得句子整体平衡。长句翻译常用的方法有顺译法、分译法和换序译法。由于英汉语法结构上的差别,在翻译此句时需要更换原文词语的前后次序,将其译为:把专心致志追求知识的人比作这样一种怪人,这一事实突出地反映了我们语言和文化的现状。然后,教师可以给出类似的例子让学生进行双语互译,从而学会举一反三。

3. 创设文化环境,增强学生跨文化意识

教师要充分利用各种资源导入文化理念。如《21世纪大学英语》中许多课文都涉及文化差异的内容:“Conversational Ballgame”介绍了西方和日本谈话方式的区别:“Education:East and West”和“Why They Excel”比较了东西文化和教育观念的不同;“The Tale of a Cultural Translator”和“A Multicultural Person”等课文用鲜活的例子说明对不同文化、不同习俗了解的重要性。教师除了推荐一些阅读材料以外,还应引导学生利用现代教学手段,如课件、多媒体、网络等,学习和品尝原汁原味的英语。

4.以学生为中心,激发其兴趣

以学生为中心可以通过以下几个活动达到。首先,布置和检查预习预习是是学生参与课堂活动的第一环节,有利于培养学生自学能力。其次,精讲多练,机会留给学生。因为实践性强是语言学习、尤其是翻译活动的特点,没有大量的实践机会,就不可能造就合格的翻译人才。再次,翻译形式多样化。可以设计多种活动,如:pair work, group work等,让学生在较为轻松的氛围里进行翻译。

五、结语

大学英语教学的主要的目标是培养学生语言综合应用能力,这种综合能力的表现形式是“听说读写译”五种能力的结合。因此,我们必须改变大学英语教学中轻视翻译能力培养的现象,将翻译有效贯穿于大学英语教学中,最终全面提高学生英语综合能力。

【关键词】零基础少数民族学生 母语迁移 英语学习

大学生在英语学习过程中,在词汇的读音、拼写、释义与应用等方面面临不同程度的困难,尤其是新疆少数民族大学生。本文站在学生的角度,通过问重点访谈的形式,对零基础少数民族大学生英语学习中存在的突出问题进行分析,并提出了具体的对策措施。

一、新疆零基础少数民族大学生英语学习中存在的主要问题

1.母语的负迁移作用。在我任教的新疆农业大学的14级的C级少数民族学生中,有69%认为词汇的释义与应用是词汇学习的主要难点,21%学生认为词汇的读音和词汇的学习是主要难点,其余10%的学生则认为词汇的拼写是词汇学习的主要难点。

首先,在记忆英语单词的拼写与读音方面,许多同学比较偏向于使用传统的在纸上反复抄写的方式来背单词,这样就必然将单词记忆的重点放在了单词的拼写上,而忽略的单词的读音,理解及应用。这样就算把单词拼对,不知其意且不知如何正确使用,只是机械的将几个字母组合记下来是毫无意义的。

其次,在单词拼写方面,由于英语与维吾尔语和哈萨克语部分名字的拼写读音和释义都很相似,部分少数民族同学就索性使用母语的读音及拼写。例如,music一词,在维吾尔语中音乐为muzika,因此有很大一部分同学就将music一词错误的拼为musika 或者muzik。

再次,在记忆单词的释义与用法方面,大部分同学充分利用母语,采用英维对比或者英哈对比的方法来学习。有些情况下在维吾尔语或者哈萨克语中找不到与某个英文单词完全对等的词汇,这就使学生惯用的“配对”式学习无从下手,或者往往回造成对英文单词词义的偏解和误解导致错用以及滥用单词。例如,我曾经在学生的作文中读到过when a police 的用法,起初我以为是句子不完整,跟学生沟通后我才发现是学生片面的将when对等到汉语的“当”,于是在表达“当警察”时,直接不管词性把when当动词用闹出来的笑话。

2.负面的心里暗示。在与学生沟通中我发现学生负面的心理暗示也是阻碍学生词汇学习的一大障碍:

首先,部分学生觉得学好英语对其今后发展没有任何的好处。接受采访的所有学生均为非英语专业的大学二年级学生,他们处于学习的针对性和目的性很强的阶段,所以他们认为自己的英语水平不会左右自己的就业,即学好英语不会挽救毕业后的就业前景,学不好英语也不会因此失去比较好的就业机会。而相比之下,学好国语和维吾尔语对于今后的发展可以起到决定性作用,所以索性把学英语所消耗的时间精力花费在学习专业课和汉语学习上。

其次,还有一部分学生认为英语是遥不可及的,学好英语是非常困难的,是几乎不肯能的。这种心理负面的暗示多来自出生于农村户口或者乡镇户口的学生,这些学生第一次背井离乡来到大城市,在大城市以及高校中还未找到归属感,自卑心理较重,他们认为能学好专业课,掌握专业技能,可以顺利毕业就已经是很不容易的事了,而英语作为国际语,离他们的自我发展太远。

最后,部分学生认为在学习英语的路上屡战屡败,反复受挫,最终放弃。这部分学生认为自己很认真的在学,每一节课都紧跟着老师的节奏,课下也按时复习,但是效果不如人意,今天背的单词明天忘,前天会读的单词,过两天就完全不认识了,久而久之一点点的跟不上累积到期末就觉得自己在听天书。

二、相应的解决办法

1.首先,学生在英语学习过程中所受到的母语干扰,不仅仅包括母语对第二语言学习的干扰,还包括其语言认识习惯和学习模式对第二语言学习的干扰。因此,在解决这一瓶颈问题时,要注意对学生思维方式和学习习惯进行细致的指导,培养少数民族学生第二语言学习的良好习惯。

再次,母语的负迁移作用是造成学生英语词汇学习困难的一个主要因素,因此,应加强英维两种语言之间的对比与分析,减少母语负迁移作用造成的影响。

2.欲消除少数民族学生学习英语中的心理障碍,高校教师应提高认识、着眼未来、唤起学生的自信心。帮助少数民族学生认识英语在当今社会交流中的重要性。随着社会的发展,英语将成为求职、与外国交流、甚至成为一个新时代青年必会的的主要语言。因此学好英语对自己将来的工作、学习、生活将有很重要的意义。

再次,多与少数民族学生接触,进行感情交流。学生学习英语的兴趣跟任课教师有很大的关系,尤其少数民族学生情感丰富,性格多数外向活泼,只要老师亲民并主动与他们交流,肯定会对他们起到极大的鼓励作用。因此,教师应把微笑带进课堂,将欢乐带给学生,做学生们的良师益友,使他们真正地喜欢自己,爱上自己的英语课。同时相信他们,给他们创造学习的机会,对他们的成绩,一点点进步,对他们在课堂上的每一次成功表现都给予肯定和表扬。这样他们会进一步学习,追求较好的成绩。每个学生都有学好的潜意识和成功的渴望,老师应创设不同的契机,满足学生的这种需求,使其能体验到成功的喜悦。找些适当的机会,让他们亲自进行社会实践,真正领会一下学好英语的乐趣。
